Deepika Padukone (born 5 January 1986) is an Indian film actress and model, primarily known for her work in Hindi language films of Bollywood. Born to badminton player Prakash Padukone, she eschewed a career in sport to pursue a full-time career in film.[4]
Padukone made her acting debut with the 2006 Kannada film Aishwarya. The following year, she played the lead female role in the reincarnation melodrama Om Shanti Om; the film proved a major commercial success and earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. She was later noted for portraying modern, independent women in several commercially successful films, including the 2009 romance Love Aaj Kal, the 2010 comedy Housefull, the 2012 romantic comedy Cocktail and the 2013 coming-of-age romantic comedy Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (the third highest-grossing Bollywood film of all time).
Padukone's performance in Cocktail earned her unanimous critical appreciation and Best Actress nominations at several award ceremonies (including Filmfare). She has thus established herself as a leading contemporary actress of Hindi cinema.[5] Her personal life has been the subject of fervent tabloid reporting in the Indian media.

Padukone was born in Copenhagen, Denmark. Her father, Prakash Padukone, is a former top world level badminton player, and her mother is a travel agent. Her father was then training in Denmark in the sport and when she was eleven months old her family moved to Bangalore, Karnataka, India.[6] Padukone has a younger sister, Anisha, born on 2 February 1991 (who is a golfer).[7][8]
Padukone attended Sophia High School in Bangalore, and completed her pre-university studies at Mount Carmel College Bangalore.[9] While in high school she played badminton at the state level, though was not keen on pursuing a career as a badminton player.[6][4] During the time of her film debut she was enrolled with the Indira Gandhi National Open University in Bachelors of Arts (Sociology).[10][11]
Padukone began modelling at the age of eight, though took a break when she was in high school. She later pursued a career in the field whilst in college,[12] and after a series of ad campaigns, she made her debut on the ramp at the Lakme Fashion Week in 2005.[3] In her early years, she has modelled for various Indian brands like Liril, Dabur Lal powder, Close-Up toothpaste and Limca, and was the brand ambassador of the "Jewels of India" jewellery exhibition in 2005.[13][14] Padukone also endorsed major cosmetics company Maybelline from 2006-08.[15][16]
At the fifth annual Kingfisher Fashion Awards she was awarded the title "Model of the Year".[17] Shortly afterwards, she was chosen as one of the models for the Kingfisher swimsuit calendar (2006) and won two trophies at the Idea Zee Fashion Awards for "Female Model of the Year (Commercial Assignments)" and "Fresh Face of the Year".[18] In addition, she appeared in the music video for Himesh Reshammiya's song "Naam Hai Tera"

Due to Padukone's successful modelling career, she began to receive offers for several film roles. She, however, did not sign on to any of these films as she considered herself fairly inexperienced as an actor. In 2005, she shifted base to Mumbai where she enrolled for an acting course at Anupam Kher's film academy.[20] The media speculated on the films that she had been signed on for, which included Farah Khan's Happy New Year. In 2006, she announced that she would make her screen debut with Indrajit Lankesh's Kannada language film Aishwarya.[21] The film, a romantic comedy, was a remake of the Telugu film Manmadhudu in which she was cast in the titular role opposite actor Upendra. The film was hugely publicised before release, and proved a major commercial success.[22] RG Vijayasarathy of Rediff.com was appreciative of Padukone's "screen presence" but added that "she needs to work on her emotional scenes".[23]
By the end of 2006, Farah Khan's Happy New Year was shelved, and Khan had instead cast her for the re-incarnation melodrama Om Shanti Om (2007).[24] Set against the backdrop of the Hindi film industry, the film tells the story of a struggling actor in the 1970s who is reincarnated to avenge the murder of the woman he loved. Shahrukh Khan starred as the protagonist, and Padukone featured in dual roles—Shantipriya, a leading actress of the 1970s and later as Sandy, an aspiring actress. In preparation for her role, Padukone watched several films of actresses Helen and Hema Malini, to imbibe their body language which she felt "were more graceful" and "completely different from today's actors".[25] On working with Shahrukh and Farah Khan she said, "I've grown up watching Shah Rukh and always admired him so much. To get to work with him [..] is quite wonderful. It was also fantastic that Farah showed faith in my talent and cast me opposite him."[26]Om Shanti Om was a hugely popular release, and emerged as the highest grossing film of the year with revenues of over INR1.48 billion (US$25 million).[27] Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama reviewed, "Deepika has all it takes to be a top star—the personality, the looks and yes, she's supremely talented too. Standing in the same frame as SRK and getting it right is no small achievement. She comes as a whiff of fresh air!"[28] At the annual Filmfare Awards ceremony, Padukone was awarded the Best Female Debut Award, and received her first nomination in the Best Actress category.[29]
Bollywood Hungama reported that the success of Om Shanti Om proved a breakthrough for Padukone, and had catapulted her into the "big league".[30] She followed this success with the role of Gayatri, a feisty student in Australia who moonlights as a cab driver in Yash Raj Films' romantic comedy Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008). Directed by Siddharth Anand, the film tells the story of a casanova (played by Ranbir Kapoor) who is romantically involved with three women (played by Bipasha Basu, Minissha Lamba, and Padukone) at different stages of his life. Though the film was a financial success,[31] Padukone's performance was not well received. Namrata Joshi of Outlook wrote, " Deepika [..] disappoints after OSO. She is mannequin-like and utterly lacks fire and zing."[32]
Padukone's first release of 2009 was Nikhil Advani's kung fu comedy film Chandni Chowk To China, in which she portrayed the dual roles of Indian-Chinese twin sisters Sakhi and Suzy, alongside Akshay Kumar. Produced by Warner Bros., the film was hugely anticipated pre-release, and received one of the most high-profile international releases for an Indian film.[33] Despite the hype, Chandni Chowk To China proved a colossal economic failure.[34] Film critics were generally disappointed with the picture and Padukone's performance; Nikhat Kazmi of The Times of India found her to be "lost and forlorn for most of the film" and Justin Trout of Orlando Weekly noted that she "is so wasted in Chandni Chowk, my mind often wandered back to Om Shanti Om during her scenes, possibly as a defense mechanism".[35][36]
That same year, Padukone featured in an item number (for a song called "Love Mera Hit Hit") in the drama Billu,[37] following which she appeared alongside Saif Ali Khan in the romantic drama Love Aaj Kal from writer-director Imtiaz Ali. The film documented the changing value of relationships among the youth, and had Padukone play the part of Meera Pandit, a head-strong career woman. With a worldwide gross of over INR1.19 billion (US$20 million), Love Aaj Kal proved the third highest-grossing film of 2009,[27][38] and garnered positive feedback from the critics. Anupama Chopra of NDTV enjoyed the film, although she noted that Padukone "isn't a strong enough actor to breathe life into the character."[39] However, at the 55th Filmfare Awards Padukone received a nomination for Best Actress.
